Have you ever thought about your influence? On others? On yourself? For the positive? For the negative?
Well, whether you believe it or not, you exercise influence every day. How do I know? By the mere definition of the word. Dictionary.com defines influence as the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself.
Most marketing is aimed at influencing the consumer’s buying behavior. Whether it be to convince people to compare your product or service with an existing one, or to try something brand new, the general outcome sought is to get people to make decisions that favor us or our clients.
With the growth and acceptance of social media, influence takes on a whole new meaning. In social media we have fans, followers and friends, as well as family. We exercise influence with each of them, not over them. In social media you could look at influence as the ability to impact someone’s attitude, behavior or view. Klout.com calls it authoritative, authentic, and accessible leadership.
Whatever you call it, or the way you look at it, influence will never be the same. I want to leave you with two thoughts.
- Who is influenced by you?
- Who influences you?
Strive from today forward to make your influence more intentional, and hopefully you will look to make it positive and impacting.
As always, we hope you learn to market naturally.
