Most of use like the learn new things. There has always been freedom in learning, mainly because we have the ability to self-learn or be self-taught. We also have parents, teachers and others who can teach us a thing or two, if we just take the time to observe, listen and learn.
Someone asked the question, “if you could be granted just one wish, what would it be”? The overwhelming response was self-improvement and the gaining of knowledge. I find that fascinating on so many levels.
Well, we live in the information age, so there is no lack of knowledge supply. There even seems to be a reasonable knowledge demand. Many are falling short of accomplishing the quest for better things. Why? With all this new knowledge gained I see little new knowledge applied.
You see, the learning if things is only one step in a multi-step process. Nothing really changes until things are applied. I’ll cite a few examples to make my point.
Years ago my wife wanted me to paint a room in the house. Instead of pestering me to do it, she gathered all the materials needed for the job and placed them in the hallway for me to have to walk by regularly. In the hall laid the can of paint, a roller, brushes, rags, screwdriver, painter’s tape, and a drop cloth. That’s plenty to do some serious room altering changes. Instead of referencing the materials, she made a statement, and I quote “a can of paint will remain a can of paint, until it is applied to a wall. Shortly thereafter I painted the room.
One of my greatest desires in life is to seek truth. There was such deep truth in that statement, that could impact so many areas of life. Here is one of the truths…nothing changes until something is applied to change it. This speaks to circumstances, situations, relationships, projects, our possessions, our time, our resources, our marketing efforts…need I go on?
Another example directly related to marketing is social media. People are aware of social media. Most have thought about it somewhat. Others have even learned some things about it by taking a class, conducting a searches on the web, and so on. Still others have created accounts on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Some have posted random things, maybe some photos, made some connections, then stopped using to tools. Why? They have not learned how to integrate them into their existing marketing mix, or they had no strategy in the first place. All new learning needs some sort of strategy to apply it to your life.
So, how can we apply what we learn? A few simple steps will help move you in the right direction:
Take advantage of your humanness. As people, we are built to respond to this system to accomplish our goals.
- think it
- write it down (begin to create the plan)
- speak it (out loud and to yourself. your ears will hear it and it will go deeper)
- share it (with someone you know who will hold you accountable)
If your take these simple steps, you can go from a hearer to a doer. It’s not power to the people, it is power to the appliers. As always, we are here to help you learn to market naturally.
